I once spent three days building a theatrical movie poster composite around a hero shot I pulled from a popular stock site. The lighting was dramatic, the subject was perfectly posed, and the resolution looked fine in the thumbnail. By day two, I had the background plate, the atmospheric fog layers, and the color grade all locked in. Then I tried to isolate the subject. The image was a compressed JPEG shot under a softbox, embedded in an sRGB color space, at 2,400 pixels on the long edge. My subject was supposed to fill a 24x36-inch print at 300 DPI. The math does not work. Three days, gone.

That composite eventually made it into my “failures” folder, which I review every month to track where my thinking was wrong. I look at that piece often. The lesson was not about masking technique or color grading. It was about stock selection. I had made the compositional decision before I had confirmed the technical foundation could support it.

The Real Problem Isn’t Style, It’s Physics

Every composite is an argument that two or more images were captured in the same physical space at the same moment. Your job is to make that argument convincing. Stock photos make that harder or easier depending on decisions the original photographer made, most of which you cannot change after the fact.

The three things that will destroy your composite are mismatched focal length, inconsistent light direction, and insufficient resolution. You can correct color in seconds. You can fake grain and texture. You cannot manufacture edge detail that was never captured, and you cannot reverse the physics of a 35mm wide-angle lens to match your background plate shot at 85mm. The perspective distortion is baked in.

When I sketch a composite on paper before opening Photoshop, which I do for every project, I note the assumed focal length, the key light position, and the approximate time of day implied by the background. Every stock asset I pull has to answer those three questions before it earns a place in the folder.

Reading a Stock Image Before You Buy

Most stock platforms let you view EXIF data before purchasing, and you should use it every time. On Adobe Stock, click the detail view. On Shutterstock, the licensing page sometimes surfaces camera metadata. What you are looking for: focal length between 50mm and 85mm for most portrait-based composites, ISO below 800 to minimize noise interference with your own layers, and a file size above 40MB uncompressed, which corresponds roughly to 4,000 pixels on the short edge at full resolution.

Light direction is harder to read from metadata, so train your eye to look at the catchlights in the eyes, the shadow fall under the nose, and the highlight edge on the shoulder. I hold my hand up to my monitor and physically match the angle. It sounds absurd. It works.

For subscription platforms, Adobe Stock’s standard license at roughly $30 per month for 10 assets gives you extended commercial use and larger file sizes than most competitors at that tier. Getty’s Unsplash+ at $12 per year is useful for background textures and environmental plates where you have more flexibility, but the resolution cap of around 5,000 pixels makes it unreliable for foreground subjects in large-format work.

Why Lighting Consistency Matters More Than You Think

I spent six months studying how light behaves on water for a single album cover project. Not six months of occasional reading. Six months of collecting reference images, photographing reflective surfaces in my apartment under different light sources, and building a reference library specifically about specular highlights on moving liquid. The final composite had a figure standing on a night ocean, and the client approved the first round. Nobody asked a single question about the water.

The reason that kind of research pays off is that viewers cannot always articulate what is wrong with a composite, but they feel it. The credibility break is almost always lighting. A subject lit from camera right placed into a scene where the sun is clearly at camera left is not just technically wrong. It registers as a lie, even to someone who has never opened Photoshop. Your stock selection is where you prevent that problem, not your masking workflow.

When evaluating a stock image for light consistency, I look for what I call the terminator line, which is the edge where the lit side of a form transitions to shadow. On a face, this runs from the forehead down through the cheekbone. That line tells you the precise angle of the key light. If your background plate has a sun at 45 degrees above the horizon on the right side and your subject’s terminator line suggests a light source that is flat and slightly left, no amount of Photoshop wizardry closes that gap cleanly.

Building a Selection System That Holds Under Pressure

I keep a structured folder system on my local drive called “Cleared Assets,” organized by light direction (left, right, overhead, frontal), focal length range (wide, standard, telephoto), and environment (interior, exterior day, exterior night). Before I start any new project, I browse what I already have. Roughly 30 percent of the time, I can build the core of a composite from assets I already own the license to.

For new purchases, I never buy a single image speculatively. I have a sketch in hand, I know the light position, and I pull three to five candidates for each role in the composite. I download the comped watermark version at full preview size, bring it into Photoshop, and do a rough cut against the background plate before spending a dollar. Fifteen minutes of testing saves hours of rebuilding.

The single most important thing I can tell you about stock selection is this: every technical problem you solve in stock selection is a creative problem that never slows you down later. Treat the search like the first hour of the job, because it is.
